East Sikkim

The district of East Sikkim is well connected through roadways with other districts of Sikkim as well as nearby important destinations of the neighboring state of West Bengal. Gangtok the state capital, can be accessed easily from places like Darjeeling, Siliguri, Kalimpong through national highways. The total distance of National Highway is East district is 40 km, State highway is 250 km, major district road is 40 km and another district road is 845 km.

The nearest airport from Gangtok is the newly established Pakyong Airport in the state of Sikkim of itself which is situated at a distance of 32 km from Gangtok. One can hire a taxi or bus service from the airport to come up to Gangtok. Another airport nearest to the place is situated in Bagdogra (West Bengal) which is situated at a distance of 124.5 km and approximately takes 4 hours to reach Gangtok. Bagdogra being far though handles more air traffic and the schedules are more flexible for the public.

For railways, the nearest railway station is Siliguri (113 km) and New Jalpaiguri (125 km) connecting Kolkata, Delhi, and other important cities of the country. Rail connectivity is under construction between Rangpo in Sikkim to Siliguri in West Bengal

Occupying the southeast corner of the state of Sikkim, lies the beautiful district of East Sikkim. Surrounded by North District on the Northern side and South & West districts on the western side, East Sikkim hosts the capital of the state and also the district headquarters, Gangtok. The district shares international borders with the People’s Republic of China and Bhutan. East Sikkim covers a total area of 964 sq km.
